Golf Cadet
Chances of getting in the US Air Force Academy ?
Im a high school sophmore with a 4.425 unweighted GPA.
I havent taken the SAT or ACT yet, but i will my junior year.
I am on the wrestling team ( 4-year varsity ) and golf team ( 3-year varsity ).
I am the secretary of the wrestling club at my school.
And I am a Civil Air Patrol Cadet.
Will getting recommendation letters from certain people help me get accepted ? Because when i apply to the academy, i plan on getting recommendation letters from my wrestling coach, my civil air patrol squadron commander, and from my uncle, who is currently a major in the USAF.
You can not have a 4.425 unweighted GPA since the unweighted GPA maximum is 4.0. That said, a 4.425 weighted GPA is still probably pretty good (depending on how your school weights these), and the information you have given is pretty favorable as well. The Academy really looks at 4 areas, Academics, Athletics, Leadership, Community Service/Extracurricular Activity.
As I said your academics look good, based on your GPA. The SAT/ACT is probably the most important factor and can completely sink you if you do poorly, but I would think you would do well. Shoot for 2000+ or at least 30+.
Athletics are also a strong point with wrestling and golf and I am going to assume at least one varsity letter, probably more.
Leadership, Community Service and Extracurricular activities are the weaker point unless you have more than you mentioned here. Do you have a leadership role in CAP? Have you been involved in anything else or any volunteer work? If not, now might be a good time to get involved.
As for the letters of recommendation, I would actually be more swayed by your squadron commander's and wrestling coach than your uncle's. His doesn't hurt, but since he is family it isn't that great, whereas the other two can really write about how they have seen you in action and about your strength of character. You will also need several academic letters of recommendation, so make sure to figure out who you want to do those as well.
