Ping Pong severing can you be beyond the corners of the table?

Playing singles 1 player was going beyond the left corner so he could use a strong forehand sever to my back hand. I've always severed from the center line, but thought that a legal serve was started any where behind the table.

When you serve and can not do that but you can volley on the side.
