Woods Set
I was speaking yesterday with a former student and asking why I hadn't seen him on any of our recent coaching calls and he confided in me that while he saw and understood the value of the calls, but he is an intuitive sales person and the tools that Tom Griffith and I share with participants are too cumbersome for his style. I appreciate any feedback that I receive, positive, negative or just plain neutral, because I wish to provide the most pertinent content to those that take the time to join Tom and me weekly.
There was a time that I felt very similar to this student. Education and practice were for those that weren't born with the talent or knack to sell and thus, I invested nothing in my own education or improvement. Of course I don't feel this way anymore and I can track this change to several events in my life, from becoming a father, my marriage ending, the changing of careers and of course failed business relationships. With these altering events in my life I sought out solutions to make it more fulfilling, but never did I believe that it would lead to improving my sales and communication skills as well as my career.
You can't compartmentalize your life. When I sum up my life, it totals relationships and that takes communication. Most of us go through life with varying degrees of success in this area. We communicate well with likeminded souls, but are challenged by those whose cognitive skills and values are different from our own; and yet we have to deal with them. Most of us begrudgingly deal with these, so called different or difficult individuals, but never really take the time to embrace what makes them dissimilar to us. Look, there are people that I will simply avoid because they're toxic, but most are not this way, they simply have values and experiences not like yours and if you fail to understand them you miss truly valuable opportunities. This would be the equivalent of a naturally gifted golfer, say Tiger Woods, who would only play his home course because he knows is so well. If he did so we would all miss out on his talent to champion when it looks like he's out of contention and then mounts a surprising comeback. His talent makes every one on the course better while also improving his own game.
Bottom line; even if you're a gifted communicator, if you fail to educate yourself and practice your skills you'll eventually reach a plateau, sooner rather then later. Why? Because our world is changing rapidly and with this rapidity your natural talents will only take you so far. You must understand the science of communication do deal effectively with the changing times. Science does away with the guess work of why and allows you to focus on the environmental changes that are affecting buying behavior and to create proven communication solutions that help you serve others.
